GREAT new thinking here, David. I’ve studied resistance to technology for years; I’d even suggest flipping this around and considering resistance as tied to a person’s place on the pyramid.
Best,
Jane
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a key concept in understanding motivation. Higher needs emerge ONLY after lower needs are fulfilled. It is hard to find altruists in places like Iraq and Afghanistan for obvious reasons.
The positions on the infographic of the various social media types in the hierarchy may be a bit rigid. Twitter for example may satisfy both “belonging” and “esteem” needs. Making dichotomies where continuiums exist oversimplifies reality.

Jane / Ed – Thank you both for your comments.
Doh! My tongue-in-cheek suggestion to add Grindr to Level 1 was lost with the original image. (I wonder if that’s why?)
That would’ve done it for me … ;-)
Thank you for this very informative post. It has come right in time to help my teammates at Schools in Kerala
I’m not clear about what the “in” represents. Linkedin?
Do you mean the bloe curcle with ‘in’ written (this is below the ‘t’ for Twittwe and ‘F’ for Facebook)? If so then this is indeed the ‘accepted’ icon for Linked In.
All the best, david
